Are You Overwhelmed by Grief or a Loss You Didn't See Coming?

Grief has a way of arriving uninvited — sometimes through the loss of a loved one, sometimes through divorce, a job loss, a move, or simply the end of who you thought you'd be by now. Whatever brought you here, you're likely feeling something you can't quite put into words. Maybe you're going through the motions but feel hollow inside. Maybe you're questioning everything. Maybe you just want to feel like yourself again.

Grief is not a problem to be solved. It's a natural, deeply human response to loss. But when it keeps you stuck, disconnected, or unable to function the way you want to, support can make all the difference.

You may be noticing:

  • You're struggling to feel joy or pleasure in things that used to matter

  • Your work performance or relationships are suffering

  • You feel disconnected from yourself — like you don't recognize who you are anymore

  • You're carrying anxiety about what comes next, or guilt about what came before

  • You're worried this heaviness will never lift

  • You feel isolated, like no one around you truly understands what you're going through

Compassionate Grief and Loss Counseling in Phoenix, AZ, Can Help.

What Does Grief and Bereavement Counseling Actually Look Like?

With any change in life, there is a loss. With loss, there is a process of grief. When we can allow our grief to be felt and explored, we can find what we need and heal.

At Third Place Therapy, we believe grief isn't something to be managed or moved through quickly. It's something to be witnessed. Our approach starts with a simple, radical premise: we ask what happened to you, not what's wrong with you.

Whether your grief is fresh or long-carried, simple or complicated, we work with the whole person, not just the symptoms. We use evidence-based modalities, including EMDR therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), to help you access the deeper layers of grief and begin genuine healing.

Every person grieves differently. That's why we tailor every session to you — your history, your pace, your way of making sense of the world. Whether you experienced a sudden loss, an anticipated death, a painful divorce, or a life transition that left you unmoored, you belong here.

FAQS

Common questions about grief counseling in Phoenix, AZ

  • Grief counseling is a form of therapy that helps you process loss, navigate the complex emotions that follow, and rebuild a sense of meaning and connection. At Third Place Therapy, sessions are 50 minutes and tailored to where you are in your grief journey. We may use trauma-informed techniques like EMDR to relieve the shock or distress of a sudden loss, or mindfulness and IFS-based approaches to help you reconnect with your inner wisdom. There's no agenda; we follow your lead.

  • The most effective grief therapy depends on the nature of your loss and how your nervous system is responding. For grief involving trauma, shock, or sudden loss, EMDR is highly effective at releasing distress stored in the body. At Third Place Therapy, we draw on multiple evidence-based modalities, and we choose together what fits you best.

  • Grief extends far beyond the death of a loved one. Our grief counselors in Phoenix work with clients navigating: death of a family member, partner, friend, or pet; divorce or relationship ending; job loss or career change; loss of health or a diagnosis; geographic moves and loss of community; loss of identity, roles, or life plans; pregnancy loss or infertility; and the cumulative grief of many smaller losses over time. If something in your life has ended and you're struggling to find your footing, grief and loss counseling can help.

  • There's no universal timeline for grief, and we won't pretend there is. The length of therapy depends on the nature of your loss, your personal history, and what you're hoping to get from the process. Most clients begin with weekly sessions for the first month, then adjust based on what's most clinically appropriate. We'll check in regularly and decide together what pace serves you best.

  • Third Place Therapy does not bill insurance directly. However, our therapists provide a superbill (an itemized receipt) after each session, which many clients submit to their insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Under the Affordable Care Act, mental health services, including grief therapy, are considered essential health benefits, so many plans offer partial coverage.

  • Session fees vary by clinician. Meredith’s fee is $200 per session. Carli's fee is $200 per session. Elaine's fee is $250 per session. We typically meet weekly for the first month, then adjust frequency based on your needs and progress. We accept cash, check, all major credit cards, HSA, and FSA cards.

  • Yes. We offer secure, HIPAA-compliant video therapy sessions to anyone in the state of Arizona. Online grief counseling provides the same depth of support as in-person sessions, with the flexibility of connecting from wherever you feel most safe and comfortable. If you're outside Phoenix but within Arizona, telehealth is a great way to access specialized grief counseling without the commute.

  • The first step is a free 15-minute phone consultation. On this call, you can share a bit about what's brought you here, ask any questions you have, and get a sense of whether working together feels right. If it does, we'll schedule your first 50-minute intake session. You can reach us by phone or use the scheduling link on this page. We're glad you're here.
